This took place between 3rd to 5th October 2018
This training gave teachers a base knowledge of Computer Programming and why it’s important to be aware and up to date on educational technology. For the purpose of scale, the program was designed for teachers due to their access and daily engagement with students. In the short- run, participating teachers were to significantly improve their mode of teaching by gaining critical reasoning and problem-solving abilities across their different subject areas, in particular, those related to science and technology. The long-term goal is to create the next generation of technology and computer savvy Nigerian teaching workforce equipped with the necessary knowledge and skill to effectively engage and nurture students who are able to compete in the current global knowledge and future data economy.
The program directly addressed the core of UNESCO’s concern and engineering education among which the need to “encourage creativity in science and engineering, teacher training, secondary and primary science education” was highlighted.
This intensive training built a foundation to produce well-trained teachers with additional computing pedagogical skills that are valuable for their teaching and education careers. All teachers that participated were exposed to Robot and robotics kits that could be used to enhance the teaching of subjects such as Mathematics and Physics in a fun and easily understandable format. The foundation for a critical mass of knowledge workers able to leverage the opportunities in the global knowledge and data economy was initiated. This would have a significant impact on the economy of the territory in medium to long term regarding science and technology and impact positively on creativity, innovation, and development.
